017.03 | "John Allan, Writer in Stirling founded the hospital, which bears his name, by a deed of donation, dated March 20 and June 5th 1724 for the maintenance, education, clothing and Apprenticeship of the male children of poor and indigent tradesmen, The deed Contains very judicious provisions manifesting sagacity and benovelence, A house was built in Spittal Street, in which the Children are taught and boarded with the Master. This arrangement not being found to answer expectation, it was discontinued. The lower part is now occupied in school rooms, And the upper part let out in dwelling houses. The Sum mortified was £1666.13 sterling, Lands were purchased, the free revenue Arising from which, After deducting the expenses of management, Amounts to About £300, And is Applied in terms of the will of the donor." Stat. [Statistical] Account of Scotland. The above mentioned building is now Known as Allan's School, there are about 40 boys on the funds at the present time who receive their education.
