Mr. William Galbraith, Town Clerk Revd. [Reverend] William Findlay Revd. [Reverend] Mr. McLachlan Statistical Account |
010 | The town of Stirling is one of the oldest in Scotland, being coeval with the Castle which, crowning the eminence on which the town was erected, was well qualified to afford it protection and shield it from the broils of that troublesome era. In later times the Castle became the occasional residence of the Royal family of Scotland, which tended to increase and extend the town. "The etymology of the name is uncertain. The names Stirling and Strivilin or Stryviling were, at one period, both in use - both occurring in the same act of Parliament: The place was also, at a very early period, know by the name of Snowdon."
