045 | An extensive farmsteading in middling repair, property of Sir James Ferguson, dwellinghouse two storeys, offices slated & thatched one storey. This farmsteading has been erected on the ruins of Dalduff Castle. Two gables of an outhouse - a few feet of masonry in the lower parts of another outhouse and a considerable part of the dwellinghouse are portions of the old building. The dwellinghouse comprises an entire vaulted chamber belonging probably to the donjon of the Castle. Several bay trees of a great age are situated near the steading. In a tale named "The Governor's Daughter" contained in a Small volume entitled The Ayrshire Wreath, Dalduff Castle is made the scene of some tragic incident occurring, it is there alleged, about in the early part of the reign of King Robert Bruce. The fort is spoken of as a place of considerable strength, and in the same volume allusion is made to a beautiful superstition still prevalent in the vicinity. During the construction of the present building an urn was found filled with spearheads javelins etc in good preservation. |
