003.14; 003.15; 007.03 | The town of Galashiels stands on the Gala Water, 5 miles N.W. [North West] of Melrose; 6 N.E [North East] of Selkirk; 18 East of Peebles; and 28. S. [South] East of Edinburgh. The original Village occupied a site on the acclivity south of the Gala, but the still partially standing, and even slightly renovated with new buildings, it has, for a considerable period, been sinking gradually into decay - the present town originated about 65 years ago. Though Galashiels as a whole is joined together in position and interests, it consists of 3 legally distinct portions. The 1st is the town of Galashiels Proper, situated in Selkirkshire, the tenure of which is leasehold, in leases of 99 years. [Continued on page 2] |

Ordnance Survey - Roxburgh county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Roxburgh, which is in the south east of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
