053 | In a field situated on the farm of "Balloch" & south eastern side of "Loyal Hill" a Cave or Weem was discovered containing black mould or ashes. John Powrie Shangie who saw this place opened about 65 years ago, pointed out the place (indicated by cross on trace) to be as near as he can recollect, the situation of the Cave or Weem discovered at that period, Captain The Hon. [Honourable] William Ogilvy of Loyal the proprietor on whose ground it was found can furnish no information; little is known of it in the parish, but by the authorities quoted. "In a ploughed field on the S. [South] side of Loyal, an artificial cavity has been lately discovered. It is the form of a ditch about 6ft [feet] deep & four broad, faced upon both sides with stones, & covered with large broad ones on the top. The tenant who occupies the ground uncovered part of it which he found full of Ashes. Whether these are the ashes of Sacrifices offered by our ancestors to their deities, or of those warriors who may have fallen in the defence or attack of the fortification on Barry Hill, to which it is contiguous, is matter of conjecture. The etremities of this Cavern have not yet been explored." Old Stat [Statistical] Account. This agrees with the description given by John Powrie.
