| Alyth | [Continued] | And from a Detached part of Bendochy by the Ericht or Blackwater. The parish is divided into two districts by the hills of Alyth, Loyall & Barry, the lower & more fertile district lies in the valley of Strathmore. The Northern district may be again subdivided into three parts 1st a tract of cultivated ground immediately behind the hills; 2nd the forest of Alyth, an extensive tract of moor & moss, separating the lowland from the Highland part of the parish; and 3rd the Blacklunans a small fertile district lying about the sidesof the Blackwater. The district of Blacklunans belongs to the County of Forfar. The village of Alyth is a place of considerably Antiquity it is situated in the district of Strathmore & has enjoyed the privileges of a burgh of barony since the reign of James III. The principal Mansion houses in the parish are Bamff, (43.13) Loyal (53.6) Balhary (53.11) & Jordanstone (53.11) and the only village is New Alyth (53.10) about a mile south of Alyth. The Antiquities are Several Cairns, the ruins of Corb Castle (Sheet 42) Pictish Dwellings (42, 42.10 & 11) the ancient British Fort on Barry Hill (53.3) & another a few yards south.(53.3) Several Standing Stones, the Ruins of Inverquiech Castle (53.4) the Old Church of Alyth (53.6) & the Site of Balloch Castle etc etc [Written in red ink] There is no portion of this parish detached , (but a portion of the Parish is in the County of Forfar, known by the name of Blacklunans") nor is there any portion of any other parish contained within the boundary of this Parish. |
