[South South East] of the Town of Dumfries or 7 Chains S.[South] of Crichton Royal Institution A large building built of red Sandstone erected in 1848-9 At a cost of £10,000.- It is a Lunatic Asylum in Connection with the Crichton Royal Institution And is 2 and 3 Storeys high It is exclusively for the Accommodation of pauper patients who pay the [present] Board of £15 per Annum exclusive of Clothing . The Building is capable of Accommodating at present about 160 but when the whole design will be completed which will consist of another wing with the extension of the centre range, it will be capable of accommodating about 400 patients, who, As the name of the building imports will be home to three Southern Counties Vizt. Wigton Kirkcudbright And Dumfries.- It was resolved At a meeting of influential Members from the Above Counties that the districts should Co- operate in carrying [out] the objects of this Institution into effect And if necessary Contribute towards the expenditure . It was hence named the Southern Counties Asylum - |
