055 | [Situation] In English street at the end of ShaKespeare Street This was the principal gate or Port [which] led into And from the Town on the East Side through the old fortification wall. It was surmounted by a Tower in which a guard could be kept ,- It was entirely demolished about 90 years ago.- The [occasion] of taKing it down was a Carrier between Carlisle and Dumfries drove a large way between those places. The Waggon with such a load could not pass through the gateway which caused a great inconvenience and therefore the Port or Gateway was [unmounted] Mr. George Dunbar who is proprietor of the ground states that this site was pointed out to him by his forefathers, John McCormack also identifies it. |
