Thousands of remarkable Ordnance Survey (OS) Name Books and tax rolls are now available to search on Scotland’s People.

The OS Name Books provide a unique tour of 19th century Scotland. They record every place name on Victorian maps. Many Gaelic place names were formally written down for the first time.

The new tax rolls offer a fascinating snapshot of daily life in the 17th-19th centuries. Servants, horses, dogs, fireplaces and even clocks in households across Scotland are listed.
