Sinclair of Keiss himself, and the other leaders of his party, who were all on horsebacK, owed their safety to the fleetness of their chargers. The engagement did not last above a few minutes and was as bloody as brief. Such was the issue of the famous battle of Altimarlach, so disastrous to the county, and so humiliating to the pride of the Sinclairs. It was the last great fight of the kind originating in a family quarrel - in Scotland, and in this respect it possesses a general as well as local interest.
