022.01 | A Small Village, about 3 1/2 Miles from Greenlaw, And 4 from Dunse; it is beautifully Situated, And as the Author of the "Picture of Scotland" Says, "it is Rather a field powdered with Cottages than a Village, the houses being literally Scattered without Any degree of regularity over the common called "The Green," It was formerly of more import than at present, an Annual fair being held here. And was also a noted place for Tanning and Shoemaking. each Shoemaker tanning his own leather, but at present there is not one of the "Craft" in the Village. There are in it a good Parish School a "Female School" (in course of erection), a Bakers' Shop, & Carpenters, and Smiths' workshops, but no house of entertainment. And the Ph. [Parish] Church is Situated about 3/4 of a mile South of the Village. It is the property of Sir H. Campbell. |
