CHURCH | Polwarth Church (Parish) | Mr. J. Smith Schoolmaster Polwarth Mr. Thompson Stewart Marchmont. Revd [Reverend] Mr. Hume. Polwarth. |
022.01 | A plain substantial building, standing on the edge of a beautiful glade in the grounds of Marchmont half concealed by ancient trees. From an inscription on the Walls it appears to have been built before the 900th year of the Christian Era, when it was endowed as a rectory and subsequently repaired in 1378, from the date of another inscription (1703) the church appears to have been then rebuilt upon its ancient foundation Walls, these having evident marks of a much greater age than the Superstructure. A Stone baptismal font of plain workmanship is still to be seen in the surrounding Churchyard and having been removed out of the Church Several years ago. Sittings for : 260. A singular circumstance which has been often the subject of remarks is, that the trees in the vicinity of the church have so frequently struck by lightning, An extraordinary instance of this occured 15 years ago. An aged Ash, standing about 100 yards north of the Church. which had endured the severity of many a Season was struck by the electric fluid, rent from top to bottom ignited, and burnt down. Underneath this Church, and occupying the whole area of the buildings is the Vault, or Burying place of the Marchmont Family, & in which for a considerable period resided Sir Patrick Hume, during the persecution in 1687. He was attended by his daughter Lady Grizel Ballie, whose character has been handed down in Scottish History. |
