"About two miles to the westward of the village of Kirkliston a little to the south of the
Edinburgh and Linlithgow turnpike road stands Niddry Castle a fine old ruin at one
time possessed by the Earls of Wintoun now the property of the Earl of Hopetoun. Queen
Mary of Scotland rested and is said to have slept there when on her flight from Loch
