024.16 ; 025.13 | This Canal connects by navigable communication the waters of the Forth and Clyde. The work was commenced in 1768 under the auspices of Sir Laurence Dundas together with a company of shareholders and in 1790, it was completed from Sea to Sea. Its entire length is 35 miles viz. from Grangemouth to Bowling Bay the number of locks on the eastern side of the Island is 20 and on the western side 19. the rise of each lock is 8 feet. The canal is crossed by 33 Draw Bridges, 10 large aqueducts and upwards of 30 tunnels it is capable of admitting vessels of 8 feet draft of water - and Steam Boats occasionally run on it.
