Near the fine cascade of South Annan Burn stands
the ruins of a very elegant Mansion, formerly the residence of the
family of Semple, and now the property of the Earl of Eglintoun. The
house was built in the reign of James VI by Lord Semple
who brought the model of it from Italy. -- Full[Fullarton's] Gazetteer
