006 | This Ruin of this Villa house or Castle are still pretty perfect, namely several of the basement or vaulted compartments still entire, the whole might be viewed as the remains of one of the Baronial Castles or Strongholds. In page 253 New Stat. [Statistical] Acct [account] it is stated The Sempils had here a splendid Villa at Underbank the ruins of which still remain. In page 420 old Stat. [Statistical] Acct [Account] Near to the spot, are the ruins of the fine house of Southannan formerly the residence of the family of Semple now the property of My Lord Eglintoune*. Independent of the latter Authorities the name Castle might be more correctly applied. |

Near the fine cascade of South Annan Burn stands
the ruins of a very elegant Mansion, formerly the residence of the
family of Semple, and now the property of the Earl of Eglintoun. The
house was built in the reign of James VI by Lord Semple
who brought the model of it from Italy. -- Full[Fullarton's] Gazetteer
