County of Ayr -- Parish of Auchinleck

"Next may be ranked the Old Castle of Auchinleck,
"the Seat of the old family of that name." "The Castle, long since
"in Ruins, stood on a high projecting point - a red sandstone rock -
"formed by the junction of the Dupal or Hillend burn with the Classic
"Lugar. The Castle - only a portion of one wall of which, with a few
"arches and other fragments, now remains, is surrounded on the
"Lugar and opposite side by deep precipices".
Patersons History

"There is an old castle at Auchinleck, which is very much
"dilapidated, but which, from its situation, must have been a
"place of great strength. The date of its erection is unknown;
"there are, however, several legends regarding its history".
