The shelving lock which abounds, particularly where the Church stands, sufficiently accounts for the designation"- The Ph [Parish] is a narrow tract of country, about 16 miles long, from E. [East] to W. [West] average width about 2 - It is bounded on the N. [North] by Mauchline, on the N. & W. [North & West] by Sorn, on the N. & E. [North & East] by Muirkirk & on the N.E. [North-East] by Crawford John (Lanarkshire) - on the E & S.E. [East & South-East] by Kirkconnel (Dumfrieshire). on the south by New and Old Cumnock, and on the S.W. [South-West] and W. [West] by Ochiltree. The antiquities of the parish are not numerous - and will be found described in the following pages of this book.
