These arches spring from massive Saxon piers, having slender circular pillars attached, with bold projecting capitals, forming imposts for the springing of the arches. The walls are thick and firmly built, and, like most other ancient churches, have narrow passages within their thickness. The exterior character of this church is very imposing, and it is, undoubtedly, the finest remains in Scotland of Saxon architecture. The deep splayed circular arch, and its characteristic enrichments, and zigzag mouldings, the nail-head, the chevron, & the diagonal ornaments, and many more well known Saxon mouldings, are to be found in the N. [North] & West fronts.
