066; 076; 077 | A large sheet of water entering from the Moray Firth at the Souters of Cromarty and extending in a slightly curved line west to Connon, a distance of water of about 22 miles. It contains a considerable quantity of oysters and His Grace the Duke of Sutherland has a small vessel engaged at present forming them into beds for breeding purposes. "The frith finds entrance between the two hills Known by the name of the Sutors of Comarty and runs up into the county a distance of about 40 miles, and is almost surrounded by an amphitheatre of hills, between which and the shore lies a wellwooded and fertile country" "The general depth of the Frith is from 15. to 20. fathoms; it preserves this depth for 12, or 14 miles but after that it shoals. It is navigable however at tide for vessels of considerable size to its furthest extermity" Extracts from New Statistical Account. 1838. |
