066 | A large village, the principal in the parish, situated on the public road between Dingwall and Tain. High Street - the principal street - is about half a mile in length, and of great width, and south of, and parallel to it are three narrower ones gradually shortening in length, towards the shore of Cromarty Firth. At right angles to, and running towards the shore are three streets and four very narrow lanes. The village contains the Free Church, Parish School, and a subscription library; two Banks, Post Office, three Hotels, and two public houses. The principal manufactories are a Mill for the manufacture of artificial marinas, and a Coach work. There are also two Steam Saw Mills, one of which is pretty extensive. Situated on the Cromarty Firth it possesses a good harbour, and ferriage across to the Black Isle. It is amply supplied with water from a Reservoir constructed in 1852 at Achnagarron, about two miles distant; a work for the manufacture of gas is at present in course of erection; and it is placed under the "Act to over [continued on page 124] |
