012.02 | A Handsome and Substantial building in which is attached a Lunatic Asylum the whole two storeys high, slated and in good Repair. Situated in New Sneddon Street and Hospital Lane, Contains the usual Males' and Females' Wards, the Governors House, Dining Halls, Washhouses. Was erected in 1752 from Assessment levied on the Community of Paisley, for the reception of the Aged and Infirm poor, together with destitute children, the Lunatic Asylum, as the name indicates, is for the recovery of insane persons, and the Safe and Comfortable Keeping of such as are fatuous and incurable. The Whole are under the management of 15 directors who are Chosen Annually, three from the town Council, One from each Parish Session, and the Other nine by the rate Payers from Amongst the inhabitants at large, The Establishment is Supported by Annual Assessment levied on the inhabitants of the Low Church Parish, the Middle Church Parish and the High Church Parish, respectively, it is conducted on the Strictest Principles of economy and with great Attention to health, cleanliness and Good Order; there are four Surgeons attached to it. The internal management is conducted by a Governor, Matron and the usual Warders and Keepers, The average number of inmates for the last half year (1857) are as follows Poorhouse, 86 males, 149 females, Lunatic asylum 20 males and 21 females. - |
