012.14 | A large and Substantial Building three Storeys high, Surrounded by a lofty and thick Wall, And With a Moderate Size yard Attached. Was Built in 1820 from Assessments levied on the County, Contains a Male Ward, Female's Ward, Debtor's Ward, Cookhouse, Wash house, Hospital, Some Weaving Shops together With a Chapel for religious Worship. The Prisoners Airing ground is under the Arches of the Viaduct, which are Adjoining the Prison yard, and are built up With lime and Stone at the North Side of the Viaduct. The Governors House is Attached to the County Building at the South Side, and under which is the Principal entrance to the Prison. The Prison is clean and Well regulated, and there is in Connection with it a Governor, Matron Housekeeper, Chaplain, Surgeon, 4 Male and 2 female Wardens. It is a County as Well as a Burgh Prison._ |
