The southerly Cottage is situated on a small eminence or knoll, which the authorities believe to be partly artificial, & to have been used as a fortress at some remote period. "A house on the barony of Ruskie about a mile north east of the Castellum of Flanders Hill, is named Keirhead. It is situated on an eminence resembling some others in Monteith, which are called Keirs, and seems to have been anciently a military post overlooking the plain on the South, and to have been partly at least formed by the hands of man" New Stat Acct.
