| HIERNA | [Continued] | ... the Romans had made, or intended to make, an addition or procestrium, westward, and divided again into two parts. From the abrupt manner in which the last works are broken off, there is reason to conclude that they had never been fully executed. The Roman Road from Ardoch crosses the Earn at a short distance above the station, and a branch leads into it. The situation is excellent, and there are strong reasons for supposing that, in the vicinity, a division of the army of Agricola pitched in a temporary, the entrenchments of which have been ploughed down. They existed in 1757 for Maitland says - "The Roman road intersects the camp at Stageath", which must refer to the entrenchments of a temporary camp not now to be seen. (Hist [History] Scot. [Scotland] vol.1 p.196). Several horseshoes were found near Strageath Camp. It was said that, about 80 years ago, the then farmer of Strageath discovered an urn, filled with treasure." Shearer's Antiquities of Strathearn "There are two Roman camps in the parish; one at Strageath, and another at Ardoch; besides several fort s of observation. The camp at Strageath is situated on the banks of the Ern, near Innerpefray. Its dimensions cannot now be ascertained with any degree of exactness, the lines and ditches being completely levelled, except in a few places. But from what remains, it seems to have strongly fortified. From its size too, it appears to have been only a temporary station for a small army."
