107 | "The church is an old fabric, that has srood for some centuries, and has often been repaired. It is said to have been built by Ochiltree Bishop of Dumblane, before the Reformation. The precise year is not known. It has however all the marks of antiquity: The roof is supported by a double row of pillars, with aisles on each side; and there is a sqare steeple at the west end; directly opposite to which, there is in the east end a quire which is a narrow building, with a large Gothic window. Near to it, are still to be seen the vestiges of three steps up to the altar." Old Stat [Statistical] Account "The parish church is of a recent date. The old building was condemned in 1825, having stood four centuries. Spottiswood says, that "Bishop Ochiltree succeeded, a wealthy prelate, and well esteemed ; and so purchased to his see a great part of the forfeited lands of Stratheam, adorned the cathedral of Dunblane, built the bridge of Knaik and Machant, with the church of Muthill; and did in his time divers other good works.'' The ruins of this ancient fabric serve to suggest the thoughts of other days, and other men, who, although dead, yet live in dear recollection. New Statistical Account It consisted of nave with aisles, and a choir, in the Gothic style. The walls are all level with the surface except those of the nave, which are in good state of preservation. A square steeple rises at the west end , about sixty feet in height, and roofed. |
