088 | Two boulder-stones which lie about a chain below the tide mark, near Invergowrie Church in a portion of the River Tay now almost cut off by the Perth and Dundee Railway and which are viewed with superstitious reverence on account of a prophetic distich referring to them by Thomas of Ercildoune popularly known as Thomas the Rhymer who lived in the latter part of the 13th. Century - The lines are "When the Gows of Gowrie come to land, The day of judgement's nears at hand". The are of uneven shape, about 4 feet long and 2½ broad and high; and about 350 feet separate from each other. The western one marks a bend in the boundary between the Parishes of Longforgan and Liff & Benvie. The origin or meaning of the name cannot be discovered. |
