[Situation] In the extreme east side of the Co. [County] Perth. A parish in the extreme east of Perthshire and stretching in a narrow oblong southeastward from the Sidlaw hills to the Frith of Tay. It is bounded on its N.W. [North West] end by Forfarshire, along its NE [North East] side by Fowlis Wester and by Forfarshire, on its SE [South East] end by the Firth of Tay, and along its S.W. [South West] side by Inchture, Abernyte and Cargill. Its greatest length is about 7 miles and its greatest breadth about 3, but it contracts so much in some places to a very inconsiderable breadth. This parish presents great inequality of soil as well as of surface. From the bold and rocky point of Kingoodie a gently sloping bank commences and stretches in a north-westerly direction diverging farther and farther from the Firth as it advances till it ends somewhat abruptly at the Snabs of Drummie. The low grounds lying to the south of it and between it and the firth are as flat almost as a bowling-green and the heaviest crops of grain are raised upon them, in other parts the soil is well adapted for potatoe and turnip husbandry. The parish forms the eastern extremity of the Carse of Gowrie and the whole of it excepting one farm lies to the south of the Sidlaw range. Longforgan is in the presbytery of Dundee and Synod of Angus and Mearns. Patron the Crown. There are no detached portions of Longforgan nor are there any detached portions of other parishes within it except a very small Detached part of Caputh about ΒΌ mile east of Milnfield |
