095 | Standing close to and at the north-west corner of the Jail, to which it is fastened for suport by iron clasps, is an ancient stone cross. It is about ten feet in height its transverse sections being about 6 inches each. It has a coronet worked out on its centre. tradition says that it was the Cross of the Burgh of Drummond and was set up about A.D. [Anno Domini] 1688. It stood in the middle of the street a short dis-tance to the west of where it now stands. It was removed in 1746 and lay in the dungeon of the tolbooth until that building was taken down in 1842. Near the Cross are large iron stocks which, according to tradition, were in existence long before there was a tolbooth in Crieff; but nothing is known of their early history. |
