095 | A very large stone of irregular shape situated on the west end of the Knock of Crieff. and has, from some unknown cause, been split into two unequal parts. The greater is known as the Cradle stone. This stone is said to have been formerly a Rocking Stone, if such has been the case it has been thrown of its balance, as it is now immovable. "Many granite boulders occur in Strathearn. A considerable number may be seen on the south-east shoulder of the Cnoc: the most remarkable of these is the one known by the name of the Cradle-stone it is nearly spherical, with a circumference approaching to 30 feet. Its weight is about 30 tones. It has been split in two by lightning, and one of the pieces has made a revolution down the hill. It is composed of syenitic granite". New Statistical Account |
