062 | This name is applied to a small strip of rough pasture ground, being the site of an ancient cairn, which was circular, of large dimensions, and composed of small stones; it was removed some years ago and the stones used in building dykes. "Cairnmure, or the Big Cairn, is about a mile and a half north-east of the church, and is the largest in the county, being 456 feet in circumference, and 14 feet in height. It formerly gave name to the property in that district, but its origin and use are quite unknown". New Statistical Account |
