A Parish in the County of Peebles bounded on the South by Manor & Yarrow, on the West by Lyne & Stobo, South by Yarrow and Traquair, East by Innerleithen and North by Eddleston Parish; it extends from North to South about 10 miles and from East to West about 6 miles. The Parish is Calculated by the Author of the Companion to the Map of Tweedale to Contain 18,210 acres; The general aspect of the Parish is hilly except along the banks of the Eddleston Water and the Tweed - none of the hills rise to a great height as in some of the neighbourhood parishes. They are for the most part grassy except those towards the South which are covered in heather and abound with grouse - The Town of Peebles stands near the Centre of the Parish, there are four fairs held annually in it, for hiring of Servants and Sale of Cattle and sheep The Parish Church was built in 1784 and at the West end of the High Street, on a small eminence, on which the Castle of Peebles formerly stood. In and about the Town previous to the Reformation several religious houses,Churches &c. stood but scarcely a Vestage [continued on page 2] |
