071 | An Island belonging to the parish of Westray about 4 miles in length by 1 in breadth and Situated 1 1/2 miles due east from the north end of Westray. The Surface rises gently towards the middle upon the highest point of which is Situated the Mansion House of Holland. It terminates on the north in the Headland well know to Mariners as the Mull of Papa. There is on the Island an under ground Picts house and the ruins of two ancient Chapels and the remains of an unusually large underground Picts house on the small adjoining Island of Holm of Papa. The Island with the exception of the extreme north end or Mull of Papa is well cultivated and the inhabitants very industrious and comfortable. Fishing and the manufacture of kelp are carried on here at the proper Season. There is an Established and Free Church on the Island and a handsome public School. There is also a good general Merchant. The whole Island is the property of Thomas Traill Esq. of Holland and Papa Westray. |
