075 | Applies to a broken rocky slope of crop and ledge rocks, Situate on the North-west Side of Fitty Hill about 1/8 mile South of the head or rise of Burn o' Cheor. It is handed down from tradition that a great battle was fought here between the inhabitants and a marauding party of Highlandmen, the latter having taken up their position on the top of this rocky Slope, awaited the onslaught of the natives, who charged courageously up the broken slope; but the Highlanders, taking advantage of the ground, poured down upon them and drove them back into the valley with great slaughter. This battle is mentioned in the new statistical account of Orkney, and it assumes that the Slain were interred in two Spots--------------------------------------------------------------------------------continued on other side--------------------------[Spots, about 1/2 mile lower down the valley in the direction of Pierowall, and separated from each other by a distance of 30 or 40 yards. These spots remain to the present day, but they are given by local authority as the sites of two houses: the father of one of the authorities given on this sheet remembered when the houses were in existence and known by the name of West Gallowhill. No information or record of the definite date of this battle can be obtained, but it is generally put down as between 150 or 200 years ago.] |
