Note next to description of St Magnus's Church:
Egilshay is famed for its ancient cathedral now in ruins, known by the name of St. Magnus Church, which is in a good state of preservation. The date of its erection is unknown: but it is supposed to have been long prior to mediaeval times. It is the oldest building now extant in Orkney. It derived its name from the tradition that Magnus, one of the Earls of Orkney, was murdered in or near the place where is stands, about 1110." - Anderson's Orkney Directory.
