| CASTLE (Site of) [South Clestron] | Ancient Castle site of |
Mr B Halcrow Orakirk |
106 | This name is given to a large mound of earth & stones situated near the coast & to the west of the farm of South Clestran, looks like a brough, or picts home, the people call it an old castle, it has not been opened. The famous Earl Haco after settling on Orkney & marrying Lady Elgath of Sandwick, built a castle at this place & lived in it afterwards. This agrees with the position of Hakon Karl's palace at Papuley in mainland. Orkneyinga Saga Page 162 |
