017.08 | This Burn rises at "Burnhead Quarry", xvii-15 Trace 1 & flows through the Farms of "Muttonhole or Thorniehill", (xvii-15 Trace 6) "Blackbog" (xvii-12 Trace 5) & enters the policies of the "High Parks", on Trace 2. xvii-12, where it is known as "Meikle Burn" until it passes out of the parks on Trace 6, xvii-4, near "Silvertonhill". From this point to where it enters the Clyde (xviii-1 Trace 4) at "Smithycroft", it is known as "Covan Burn". In the first part of its course it has no name, being, like all minor streams, named from the various Farms through which it flows. The Statistical Account gives it the name of "Covan Burn" generally, but that name is not known until [it] passes out of the Parks & enters the Clyde, As the proper well known name _ "Meikle Burn" |
