R. Clark, Road Surveyor W. Henderson, Town Clerk F. Hamilton, Writer, Hamilton |
012.13 | A County Bridge with five arches over the River Clyde. It was built in 1779, after a flood had destroyed a Bridge which stood in the same place, & since that time has borne the term "New Bridge", a name by which it is as well knows as that upon the authorities here quoted, who consider this to be the proper name. There was a pontage on this Bridge until these last two years. The old Toll house is on the east side of the Bridge & is now occupied by Colliers. At the west side of the Bridge there is a gate which the Duke of Hamilton is obliged to keep open for persons belonging to the Burgh of Hamilton, going for sand from the Clyde Side, about 9 chains north of the Bridge. This sand bed is Public for persons of the Burgh only. The Duke has the right of the ground & the people the liberty of procuring sand 0 the sand has no name except Clyde Sand. |

Ordnance Survey - Lanark county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Lanark, which is in the west of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
