011.16 | "A Superb Structure, resembling in general design the Mausoleum of the Emperor Hadrian at Rome. It consists of a circular mass of building, springing from a square basement, & enclosing a richly decorated chapel, under the floor of which are the Vaults, arranged catacomb fashion. Highly ornate terraced stairs lead on either hand from the low ground, on the River front, to an external platform, on which the colossal Lions by H. Ritchie, have been placed. Below on the rustic basement, above the portals to the vaults, are efficies of Lfe, Death & Eternity, each personified by a human visage. The internal arrangements of the Chapel are octagonal. The first, or lower course, had four deep, alternated by four flat, alcoves or recesses. The second a series of Shileds, with cherubs & pious scrolls. The third, & upper course, contains a series of niches for Statues, separated by twin Doric pilasters. Dentilling & other enrichments follow as the dome narrows, to a circular opening, covered by an immense concave glass roof in one casting, lighting the whole chapel. On a plain slab outside, on the circular part of the tower, above the chapel door, is the following inscription (in latin): - "Alexander tenth Duke of Hamilton, took care to erect this tomb for him & his." - Brown's Directory |

"King Mausolus, the eldest of the three sons of Hecatomnus, the wealthiest of the Carian dynasty died B.C.353; when his widow, and Sister Artemisia erected to his memory, at Halicarnassus (now Budrun) a superb tomb, which by its artistic celebrity has given the name of Mausoleum to tombs and sepulchres of Stately Character." - Curiosities of History [Roy] Timbs
