087 | On the east side of Ardchattan House are the remains of what was once the famous priory of Ardchattan. Several of the walls are still partly standing, one of which is fully 10 or 12 feet thick, and perforated by an archway. Some scantly remains of its ornamental carving are still to be seen, two figures inserted in the wall, and a font. There are also many curiously carved tombstones: one said to cover the grave of Bishop Carswell bears the effigy of a priest, and is nearly covered with inscriptions in the runic character. "The once celebrated Ardchattan priory is now little better than an ivy mantled ruin. The site of the Chapel in connection with the monastery can still be distinctly traced.
