"Fordoun was a vicarage belonging to the Archbishop of St Andrews
and was Called a Mensal Church, the teinds of the parish being
allotted for the support of the Archbishop's table. Forbes or Tytler
Says it was called "The Mother Church of the Mearns " (New Stat Act) [New Statistical Account].

"The very old church of Fordoun which had stood 200 or 300 years, and was 100 feet long over
walls and 24 feet in breadth at the widest and 16 at the narrowest gave way in 1787 and was
replaced by a new one in 1788, in 1827, the roof of that new church also gave way and was replaced
in 1830 by a large and elegant structure the admiration of all who visit it." (New Stat Act.) [New Statistical Account]
