020.03 | The place as marked on trace is pointed out as the site of the Castle of Mondynes. There has evidently been a building at this place, and traces of which appear to have been the enclosures of a garden, are yet visible, but the foundation of the building is destroyed. I have not been able to find any record of this Castle, in the Stat. Act. [Statistical Account], or any other book relating to the county, but it appears from what is stated in the "Memorials of Angus and the Mearns" Pages 24*, 94, 150 and 369, that Mondynes was a noted place in 1200-7. It is stated in the last named page (369) that, "William of Montfort and Humphrey of Berkely were probably settled there in 1178-98." The name "Castleton", which applies to the Farm steading close by would also lead to the supposition that a castle had stood here. The site as pointed out is on a natural ridge or elevation immediately north of the Farm Steading of Castleton, the property of William Forbes Esqr. [Signed] B. Render Corpl R.E. Ordnance Survey - Kincardine county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Kincardine, which is in the north east of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
