85 - Abbey

[Note] -- here [initialled] [PB]

[Note] -- There is only a small part of the
ruins at present remaining Probably
the refectory. The walls are standing their
original height with the chimneys perfect
and the lower storey still perfect, the
groined arches of the cells or apartments
in good preservations. But from what
could be learned in the locality the
ruin now remaining was but a small
part of the building of the Convent
therefore "Remains of" not "Ruins of" is the
proper term to be written on plan.

Also Abbey or Nunnery, is written on plan in preference to Abbey, only which, latter, appears to be the popular
term applied to this established in the locality & even by writers. But as Abbey appears not to be a usual designation for a nunnery
& particularly one governed by a prioress as this always was It is therefore better to retain the two terms viz. the popular one & that which particularly designates the establishment.

Ordnance Survey - East Lothian county

Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of East Lothian, which is in the east of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
