010 | [situation] At western extremity of Court Street Adjoining West Port A monument erected in 1843 by the Tenantry &c. of East Lothian at an expense of about £600. It consists of a fluted column of the Grecian Doric and is surmounted by a colossal statue of Robert Ferguson Esqr. of Raith to whom it is in memory of. The column is placed upon a square base or pedestal which is ornamented by four allegorical figures in alto-relieve representing Justice, Geology, Art and Agriculture as emblematic of the ruling studies of the deceased. The following is the inscription on the Pedestal, " In memory of Robert Ferguson of Raith M.P. [Member of Parliament] Lord Lieutenant of Fife F.R.S.L. F.R.S.E. &c &c. A kind landlord, a liberal dispenser of wealth, a generous patron of Literature Science & art. An enlightened supporter of the interests of his country. This Monument is erected by the tenantry of East Lothian and many friends of all classes who united in admiring his public virtues, An to whom he was endeared by every quality that flows from goodness of heart. A.D. 1843 " |
