046 | [Situation] Adjoining the SE. [South East] corner of the parish church This is one of the ancient sculptured stones which hitherto puzzled antiquaries as to the meaning of the devices sculptured upon. This stone which is now set up at an angle of the parish church was formerly sunk in the earth up to its top and was opposite to the middle or central part of the church a few feet from its south side, but was removed and placed where it now stands at the expence of Mr. Chalmers of Auldbar at the time he was preparing the manuscript of his book on the sculptured stones of Forfarshire. Tradition says it was erected to the memory of St. Vigeans, but antiquaries give no credit to this, unlike most of the other stones of this class this one is remarkable for figures of men in the costume of monks or other Churchmen but the cross as usual is figured with interlaced Knot work, and has figures on the reverse side of different kinds of animals and has the usual Z shaped figure or symbol. The arms of the cross which originally was but short is very much much mutilated. In Chalmers work above referred to there is engraved a facsimile of the stone as it now stands with its sculpture.
