| STONE COFFIN OR KISTVAEN (Found Here) [Woodhill] | Stone Coffin Human bones and an Urn found 1857 | Alexander Hay Milnes Esq: Mr. David Young, Woodhill |
051 | [Situation] 11 Chains W. by N. [West by North] of Woodhill In May 1857, Mr David Young, the farmer of Woodhill, when ploughing at the place marked X on trace, discovered some ancient remains. The plough stuck in a flag when ploughing deep. On clearing this flag, beneath were a few stones (five or six) arranged symmetrically, and below these, and at a depth of about 6 ft. [feet] from the surface of the ground, was found another flag - the Cover of a Coffin. The sides of the Coffin were of unhewn rough pavement; it had no bottom, and was composed of five flags (length 40 in [inches], breadth 25 in [inches], depth 20 in [inches]) laid N.W [North West] and SE [South East] by compass. A skull was in the centre of the Coffin, and the remaining bones on each side, all much decayed, but presenting no traces of burning. In the S.W. [South West] Corner was an Urn, half filled with a black looking earth, on removing which, being handled carelessly, the Urn was cracked. The bones and the Coffin were closed up, as they were found, and the Urn is in the possession of Alexander Hay Milnes, Esq, of Woodhill Ho. [House] These remains are supposed to belong to the earliest period. The place excavated is marked in the field by a standing flag, about 3 ft. [feet] high. |

Ordnance Survey - Angus county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Angus, which is in the east of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
