[situation] Runs through the Eastern part of Cupar. The River Eden has its source on the borders of Perthshire, in the Ph. [Parish] of Arngask, about 3 1/2 Miles Westward of the town of Strathmiglo; and after a course of 20 miles nearly due east, through the entire extent of the beautiful and fertile valley of Stratheden, falls into the sea at Eden Mouth near St. Andrews. It receives many tributary Streams from the Lomond Hills before it arrives at the Co. [County] town of Cupar, at which place it receives a small rivulet called Lady Burn, and about 3 Miles farther east it is joined by a considerable stream from the South, flowing through Dura Den called Ceres Burn. Its course from Cupar to the Sea is very Slow, the fall being very gradual. the tide rises as high as Lydon Mill, only about 3 miles from the town of Cupar. Previous to the year 1787 it used to overflow its banks in spring and Autumn and do much damage to property on its banks, but about the time already stated, it was diverted into a straight channel through the greater portion of its Course, from Shiels in the Parish of Collassie eastward - |
