[situation] On the S. [South] side of Nether Street. An endowed School built & supported by the income derived from property left by Robert Philp of Edenshead, by will dated 15th May 1820, in which after enumerating some few legacies he directed that 3/8 of the income of the whole residue of his means & estate should be devoted to the Education & Clothing of 150 poor children (Boys & Girls) in the districts of Dunnikier, St. Clairtown & Hawklymuir. From the increase in value of the property the number of children is now augmented to 300. The scholars are taught a general course of English education, & are furnished from the fund with books, Paper etc. The masters salary is £150 per annum. Masters assistant £80 per annum. Mistress £40 per annum & a Female Assistant £25 per annum. |
