031 | [situation] ½ Mile N.W. [North West] of Loch Gelly. A large thriving village partly in the parish of Auchterderran and partly in the parish of Ballingry. It is tolerably well planed, having a Main Street extending nearly east and west from one end to the other, with cross Streets branching right and left at nearly right angles. The inhabitants are chiefly Colliers. There are a few Weavers, Clothiers, Publicans, Grocers and Mechanics. There are two Schools two Public Halls one U.P. [United Presbyterian] Church a Post Office and Lockup in the village. |
