023; 024; 033; 042 | [situation] Nearly in the centre of the County of Dumfries. The Name of this Parish is written in Ancient records Johnston and Johnstone, that is the dwelling- place of John- seemingly indicating by this signification that some illustrious person of the Name had his residence in this Parish during the Scoto-Irish period. The Name is now invariably spelt Johnstone which is similar to that of the Annandale family nearly sole Proprietors and - Patrons of the Parish. The Parish of Johnstone is bounded on the North by that of Kirkpatrick- Juxta, on the East by Applegarth and Wamphray, on the South by Lochmaben and on the West by Kirkmichael. There is no detached part of Johnstone within the limits of another Parish, nor is there within its boundaries a detached portion of any other Parish. Its shape is triangular - measures 6 miles in length and 3 miles in average breadth.- It's Area is now computed at about 13,610 acres, of which 1,500 are under wood, 800 moss, 1600 mountain pasture and 10,800 Arable land, but the soil is poor and not so productive as in the majority of Parishes of this County. Along the East side of Parish it is flat, the soil of which consists of a dry loam or gravel, in the interior there are a number of Mosses, under the surface of which, large trees of birch and oak are found [&] which indicate their growth from the original soil previous to the moss formation,- towards the N. and N.W. it is hilly, Mollin Moor, Deer Edge and Minnygap Height in these districts attaining an altitude of from 1300 to 1400 feet above sea level. This Parish is exceedingly well watered by several large streams and numerous rills, the principal of which are the River Annan - forming for the most part the Eastern Parish Boundary, Kinnel Water partially forming the Western Boundary and Duff Kinnel Water on the Northern Boundary.
