[Continued from page 1] "Hawick running along the West bank the Ewes traverses the whole length of the Parish. No minerals are wrought nor manufactories carried on. Coal has been supposed to exist. The district is in the strictest sense rural; it has no village. Nearly 3/4 of the Parish belong to the Duke of Buccleuch. Farm Steadings have in general excellent accommodation and many modern improvements. The population at the last census was 334, which shews a considerable decrease since 1755 when it was 392. Several circular entrenchments are distinctly visible throughout this Parish believed to have formed ancient British Forts of which the New Statistical Account of Ewes says "there are the remains of Small Stations, which - evidently from their formation appear to be either Saxon or Pictish". The Site of the Church anterior to the Reformation has been shewn of which Chalmers in his Caledonia mentions that "The principal Church of Ewisdale was dedicated to St. Cuthbert, and stood on the West side of the Ewis, at a hamlet which was called Kirktown of Nether Ewis." Another ancient Church is said to have existed at the same period as the above, but no one in the district can point out its Site. Two Chapels are likewise said to have stood respectively at Mosspaul and Unthank, of which the Site of the latter can only be pointed out. The Site of that at Unthank has been shewn. |
